Cycloaddition

A cycloaddition reaction indicates the addition of two π reactants to form a cyclic adduct with formation of σ bonds at the ends of the π components and concomitant reduction in π length in each component. Cycloadditions are bimolecular as for example in the Diels–Alder reaction in which two π systems interact to form two σ bonds and a new π bond in the cycloadduct.
